About the Event

This course is designed for engineers who are using ASPEN OneLiner to perform short circuit and relay coordination studies and wish to become more proficient in using the program. The course material is intended for users of all levels. The class will include hands-on training in System Modeling, Short Circuit Studies and Protective Equipment Studies.

Topics

  • OneLiner user interface.

  • Network modeling: Generators, transmission lines, transformers, MOV-protected series capacitors, zero sequence mutuals, and models of inverter based resources.

  • Short circuit calculations: starting voltage assumptions, outaged and grounded lines, circulating current in wye-wye-delta transformer, phasor probe, simultaneous faults, batch fault simulation.

  • Overcurrent, distance relay protections and logic scheme modeling.

  • Plotting overcurrent relay curves, and conductor- and transformer-damage and inrush curves.

  • Plotting distance relay characteristics.

  • Plotting protective-device characteristics on the time-distance diagram.

  • Importing relay data from SEL 5010, 5030 and other manufacturers' relay data files.

  • System-wide relay coordination studies, automatic coordination checking functions.

  • Tools for compliance with PRC-023-3, PRC-025-1, PRC-026 and PRC-027.

  • Special applications: breaker rating module, arc-flash hazard calculator, stepped event simulation, fault location, export relay test file, boundary equivalent, ground current calculator.

  • Network model and relay data management.

  • Overview of OneLiner automation using Python.

Instructors

  • Thanh Nguyen received his BS and MS degrees in Nuclear Power Engineering from Moscow Power Engineering Institute in Russia and a PhD degree in power system at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Thanh is a member of IEEE.

  • Chris Weldy received a BS from Texas A&M, an MS from Georgia Tech, and a PhD from Baylor, all in electrical engineering. Prior to joining ASPEN, he worked in System Protection and System Planning at a utility for over 15 years, where he performed power system analysis and design, modeling and simulation, and software automation.

  • Xu Zhang joined ASPEN as a power software developer after receiving a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. Xu is a Member of IEEE.
